Civic elections will be held in Uttarakhand only on the basis of 2011 population | News India

Dehradun, 05 October (HS). Municipal elections in Uttarakhand will be held on the basis of 2011 population only. The Select Committee constituted for the Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act 1959) Amendment Bill has taken these decisions after examining OBC reservation in municipal bodies.

Many important decisions related to the Municipal Corporation were taken in the meeting of the Select Committee held in the Assembly on Saturday. The decision is that the current civic elections will also be conducted on the basis of Population Census 2011. Chairman of the committee, Urban Development Minister Premchand Aggarwal said that the tenure of the select committee is ending on October 8. The Select Committee requests that this tenure be extended further, so that more important decisions can be taken in the context of municipal elections. For this, a request will be made to Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri and concerned people. Committee members Vinod Chamoli, Munna Singh Chauhan, Shahzad, Khajandas, Mamta Rakesh, Harish Dhami were present in the meeting.

Actually, the tenure of the municipal bodies in the state had ended in December 2023. Only after that the government has handed over the bodies to the administrators. The state government had introduced the Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act 1959) Amendment Bill during the monsoon session held in Gairsain for OBC reservation in the municipal bodies of the state, but the ruling party MLAs had raised objections to the survey of OBC reservation. BJP MLAs Munna Singh Chauhan and Vinod Chamoli had raised questions on the survey along with the demography of the state and demanded handing over the bill to the select committee. The Speaker of the Assembly accepted it and sent the bill to the Select Committee.
