For the first time in the country, 14 people have been given Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). These people came to India from neighboring countries after being victims of exploitation on religious grounds. These 14 people are the first people to get citizenship under this law. On Wednesday, the Union Home Ministry handed over the documents related to Indian citizenship to these people and accepted their application. Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla handed over citizenship documents to these people and congratulated them. The Citizenship Amendment Act was implemented on March 11 this year. An application under this Act is considered by the district level committee and after that the application goes to the state level empowered group. After getting its approval, the Home Ministry takes a decision on it. In the last two months, the Home Ministry has received applications from people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. These people include people from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities. These people have come to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan after becoming victims of religious exploitation. All these people had come to India before 31 December 2014. According to CAA, it was decided that the applications of the people who came till 31 December 2014 will be considered.
Online application required
Those seeking citizenship under the CAA will have to apply and state which languages they are proficient in are included in the 8th Schedule of India. This application is submitted online. Along with this, documents of the concerned country from where they have migrated will also have to be shown. In particular, they will have to show the document that they were citizens there.
This law was passed in 2019
The CAA law was passed in 2019 but its rules could not be finalized. There was a lot of opposition to this law and then it was postponed due to Corona. Finally its announcement could be issued. However, opposition ruled states including West Bengal are strongly opposing this law. He has also been accused of opposing the law to preserve his minority vote bank.
