22 August is the 120th birth anniversary of China's revolutionary and reformist leader Deng Xiaoping. He was the Chinese leader who, after the death of Mao Tse-tu, when the country was in political and economic crisis, it was Deng who led the country towards a market economy. On his birth anniversary, a program was organized to remember him. Where Chinese President Xi Jinping talked about focusing on the Chinese army.
Celebrating Deng Xiaoping's birth anniversary, Chinese President Xi Jinping not only praised his contribution to the Communist Party of China (CPC) but also emphasised on building a modern military in sync with the country and the world. Xi said the best way to honour Deng is to carry forward the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics initiated by him.
He also recalled that Deng had stressed the need to build the PLA into a strong, modern and organised force and have fewer but better soldiers. PLA Commander-in-Chief Xi asked the military to improve its strategic capabilities to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests, reports China Post. Moving away from its decades-old doctrine of winning localised wars, China's military is focusing on winning wars against stronger enemies and adversaries as Beijing faces growing challenges on multiple fronts, including from the US, a top defence official said.
China is facing change
Earlier, on the occasion of PLA's founding day, Miao Hua, a member of the Central Military Commission, the top decision-making body of the military headed by Xi Jinping, said that in the new journey, we must modernise the Chinese military and defeat the enemy. An article in the official PLA Daily on August 21 said that Deng had taken such strategic decisions in the 1980s that even a world war could have been averted or avoided, but China is now facing many difficulties.
Preparing for a military conflict
Along with this, Deng said that we should always maintain strategic clarity about the potential dangers of war. One should prepare thoroughly for military conflict, effectively prevent war and win the war decisively. The new instructions given to the PLA to win the war against powerful enemies and opponents are being considered a major reform for the Chinese army in view of the increasing challenges on many fronts.
China's relations with Taiwan deteriorated
The CPC's directive to the PLA was to develop the ability to win a local war given China's long-running border dispute with India, as well as maritime disputes with Japan in the South China Sea and the East China Sea. China's relations with Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory, have also deteriorated in recent times. China claims most of the South China Sea, while the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan dispute its claim.
