Child mortality rate in Mumbai increased by 21 percent, more than 2 thousand deaths after Corona

Mumbai: In the last five years, the child mortality rate in Mumbai has increased by an alarming 21.3 percent. During this period, children up to five years of age have died. This information has been given by the sources of Health Department of Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

Before the Corona epidemic spread in Mumbai, 1,779 children aged one to five years had died. However, this number of child deaths increased to 2,158 in 2023. A total of 9,972 children died in the city over five years.

Also, a total of 5,301 adolescent deaths in the age group of 10 to 18 years were also recorded in the city between 2019 and 2023. However, the municipality did not disclose how many children aged between six and nine died. Additionally, the municipality did not provide any information on how many children aged five to ten years died in the context of a Right to Information application. If this information had been made public, the death toll of children would have been higher.

Officials of the health department of the municipality clarified that the child mortality rate is so high due to reasons and factors like premature birth of the child, death of the mother during delivery, malnutrition, congenital deformity of the child, infection etc. ,

A senior health department official has expressed concern that if the pregnant woman does not get adequate and nutritious food, the unborn child also does not get adequate nutrition, timely and correct diagnosis is also not done, it can lead to health problems. Are born. The rate of premature birth of newborns is also increasing with age. For example, if a girl gets pregnant after 40 years, she has to face problems like high blood pressure, thyroid, chromosomal disorder etc. As a result, the baby is born prematurely.

According to pediatricians, after the Corona epidemic, the immunity of children has become weak, due to which their chances of getting various diseases have increased. Also, children may have problems with blood defects and anemia (the amount of blood cells in the child's body is less than the correct amount). The city should have proper and excellent medical facilities so that such worrying situations do not arise.

At the same time, in 2023, the Women and Child Welfare and Development Department of the Maharashtra Government informed the Assembly that in the last four years, a total of 32,292 children have died in 16 districts of the state.
