Kolkata, 01 August (HS). Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday demanded the withdrawal of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) imposed on life insurance and medical insurance premiums through her tweet. She termed it an anti-people step and said that it is adversely affecting the ability of people to meet their basic needs.
“We demand the Government of India to withdraw the GST imposed on life insurance and medical insurance premiums as it goes against people's health imperatives. This GST severely impacts people's ability to take care of their basic needs,” Chief Minister Banerjee tweeted.
They also warned that if the Government of India does not withdraw this anti-people GST, they will be forced to take to the streets.
After this tweet by Chief Minister Banerjee, political turmoil has intensified in the state. Trinamool supporters have started preparing to protest against the central government on this issue. At the same time, opposition parties termed this statement as a political stunt and said that the state government should first focus on its work.
