Guwahati, August 24 (HS). Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited Silchar Medical College and Hospital and dedicated the 20-bed Cardiology ICU at the Medical College in Silchar to the service of patients.
The Chief Minister, in the last leg of his three-day Barak Valley tour, visited the Medical College and Hospital today and inaugurated the Cardio ICU unit, besides taking stock of the ongoing construction of a 535-bed emergency building, which will become an annexure to the existing structure. It may be noted that the new emergency building is likely to be inaugurated in November next year. This will increase the total bed capacity of the hospital from the present 1350 to about 1885 including ICU beds.
Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also assessed the facilities planned in the new building, where five departments will be shifted to improve patient care, including critical and emergency.
He said another building with a capacity of 1,000 beds will be constructed on the premises of Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Additionally, the chief minister assessed the ancillary services of the hospital, including staff vacancies, keeping in view the needs for the next 10 years. He directed the PWD (Building) officials to prepare a master plan for the future expansion of the hospital. Guardian Minister in charge of Cachar Jayanta Mallabarua, MP Parimal Suklabaidya, MLAs Kaushik Roy, Dipayan Chakraborty, Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital Dr Bhaskar Gupta and other senior officials of the government were present in the meeting.
