In view of the potential threat, the central government has provided Z category VIP security of armed commandos to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, an official statement said.
The Union Home Ministry has entrusted the responsibility of providing a team of about 40 to 45 soldiers to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
The threat assessment report prepared by central security agencies has recommended tight security for Chief Election Commissioner Kumar. This decision has also been taken keeping in mind the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections starting from April 19.
According to sources, armed commandos will accompany the Chief Election Commissioner during his visit to the country. Kumar is a retired IAS officer of 1984 batch. He assumed the office of Chief Election Commissioner on May 15, 2022.
He was appointed as the Election Commissioner in the Election Commission on September 1, 2022.
Generally, not every Chief Election Commissioner is given Z category security. Earlier, TN Seshan was allotted central security.
