Chandipura virus has killed 51 people so far, Health Ministry has issued advisory for the neighbouring states of Gujarat

New Delhi, 01 August (HS). So far 51 patients have died due to Chandipura virus and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases in Gujarat. So far 148 cases of AES have been reported, out of which 140 are from Gujarat. 59 of these cases have resulted in death. Chandipura virus has been confirmed in 51 cases. According to the report released by the Union Health Ministry, a decline in new cases of AES has been observed since July 19. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Faculty of National Vector Borne Disease Control Center (NCVBDC) have issued a joint advisory to guide the neighboring states reporting AES cases.

On Thursday, the ministry said that since the beginning of June, cases of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) have been reported in Gujarat among children below 15 years of age. As of July 31, 148 AES cases (140 from 24 districts of Gujarat, 4 from Madhya Pradesh, 3 from Rajasthan and 1 from Maharashtra) have been reported, of which 59 have resulted in death. Chandipura virus (CHPV) has been confirmed in 51 cases. To deal with the situation, the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) and Director, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Thursday reviewed the current situation. The central team has advised the neighbouring states to take measures including insecticide spray for vector control, IEC, sensitization of medical personnel and timely referral of cases to designated facilities.

The Central Government has deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT) to assist the Gujarat State Government in undertaking public health measures and conducting detailed epidemiological investigation of the outbreak.
