BJP, which destroyed democracy in Chandigarh Mayor elections, has suffered a big setback. Two MPs who left Aam Aadmi Party have returned home.
After the defeat by the Supreme Court in Chandigarh elections, now BJP has suffered another setback. Two Chandigarh Municipal Corporation councilors on Saturday rejoined the Aam Aadmi Party, just weeks after joining the BJP.
Councilors Poonam Devi and Neha Musawat had joined BJP on February 18, out of which Poonam and Neha have again joined the Aam Aadmi Party. The two returned to AAP less than a month later.
Before the hearing in the Supreme Court, three AAP councilors joined BJP, out of which two have returned home. With this, AAP's strength in the 35-member House of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has reduced to 12, while BJP's strength has reduced to 15.
Congress has seven councilors and Akali Dal has one councilor. Three AAP councilors joined the BJP on the same day BJP's Manoj Sonkar resigned as Chandigarh mayor following allegations of election fraud and malpractices.
At that time Neha Musawat had called AAP a fake party and said that the party had made false promises. The Supreme Court later overturned the results of the Chandigarh Mayor election and declared AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar as the winner.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that the eight ballot papers invalidated by Returning Officer Anil Masih were valid and cast in favor of Kuldeep Kumar. Last week, the BJP won the re-election for the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor by defeating AAP-backed Congress candidates.
