Centre criticises Netflix over Hindu names of terrorists in IC 814 | News India

Mumbai: The central government has sent a letter to the India content head of OTT platform Netflix for not changing the Hindu code names of terrorists in the web series 'IC 814, The Kandahar Hijack'. He has been asked to appear tomorrow on Tuesday.

The content head has been asked to appear before the competent authority of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

In this series, the two terrorists who hijacked the plane have been given Hindu code names of Bhola and Shankar. This has created a big controversy on social media.

When Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister at the Centre, a plane was hijacked while going from Kathmandu to Delhi and was taken to Kandahar in Afghanistan. The web series based on this entire incident stars actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Vijay Verma, Manoj Pahwa, Arvind Swami.

There is a character of Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh in the series but his name has been changed. Net users are arguing that the names of the terrorists could have been changed in this way.

According to the official statement issued by the Indian Foreign Ministry at that time, the terrorists who kidnapped Planan included Ibrahim Akhtar, Shahid Akhtar Syed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistry Zahoor Ibrahim and Shakir.

However, according to statements given by passengers of this hijacked plane, the terrorists inside the plane addressed each other as Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola and Shankar.

Thus, the producer of this series, Anubhav Sinha, has kept the same code name for the terrorists. He has also faced opposition for not changing this name.
