New Delhi, 04 December (HS). The Central Government is developing National Legal Metrology Portal (eMAP) to integrate State Legal Metrology Departments and their portals into a unified national system. The initiative aims to streamline the processes of issuing licenses, verification, and managing enforcement and compliance.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said in a statement issued on Wednesday that the Department of Consumer Affairs of the Central Government is developing the eMap. It aims to simplify the processes for issuing licenses, verification, and managing enforcement and compliance. Once implemented, businesses and industries can obtain legal metrology approval, license and registration certificate by applying online.

According to the ministry, having a centralized database will eliminate the need for eMAP stakeholders to register on multiple state portals, thereby improving ease of doing business and also promote transparency in business rules. For the development of the portal, a hybrid meeting was held under the chairmanship of Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, on 28 November with participation from industry and industry associations like FICCI, CII, PHD, ASSOCHAM, representatives of State Legal Metrology Departments and the team from NIC. The suggestions received during the meeting are being reviewed and incorporated to make the portal efficient and user friendly.

The ministry said that in the current system, state governments are using their own portals for registration of packaged goods, issuance of licenses and verification and stamping of weighing and measuring instruments. However, enforcement activities and resolution of crimes etc. are not online. Therefore, the Department of Consumer Affairs is integrating all the State portals as National Legal Metrology Portal ‘eMAP’, which will cover all the legal metrology functions including enforcement and will help in creating a unified data base.
