The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the construction of Varanasi-Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Multi-Tracking Rail Project with an estimated investment of Rs 2,642 crore. Now it has been decided to build a new bridge which will have 4 railway lines on the lower deck and a 6-lane highway on the upper deck. In terms of traffic capacity, it will be counted among the largest bridges in the world. This bridge will be completed in Varanasi in four years at a cost of Rs 2642 crore. The bridge is being prepared keeping in mind the next 150 years.

The proposed multi-tracking project will ease operations and reduce congestion, thereby providing much-needed infrastructure development on the busiest sections of Indian Railways. The project passes through Varanasi and Chandauli districts of Uttar Pradesh. The project is in line with Prime Minister Modi's vision of a New India, which will make the people of the region self-reliant through comprehensive development in the region. This will increase their employment or self-employment opportunities. The project will also generate direct employment for approximately 10 lakh man-days during construction. The project is an outcome of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, made possible through integrated planning and will provide seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services. Covering 2 districts of Uttar Pradesh, the project will extend the existing network of Indian Railways by about 30 kilometres.
