Celebrities should stay away from gambling and betting advertisements, Central Consumer Protection Authority issued guidelines

New Delhi: Consumer watchdog CCPA issued an advisory on Wednesday warning celebrities and influential people to desist from promoting illegal activities like betting and gambling. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a warning to all stakeholders saying that strict action will be taken against anyone found indulging in such illegal activities.

As per the Consumer Protection Act 2019, the advisory issued by CCPA seeks to ban advertising, promotion and endorsement of activities that are illegal under various laws. Betting and gambling is prohibited under the Public Gambling Act 1867 and is considered illegal in almost the entire country. However, despite this, many platforms and apps advertise these activities. The watchdog believes that supporting such activities has negative financial and social impacts, particularly on young people. The CCPA has said that these guidelines will apply to all advertisements, regardless of the medium used to issue them.
