CBSE Board Exam 2028 New Pattern: New study structure of 10th board exam released

The Central Board of Secondary Education i.e. CBSE has taken a historic and revolutionary decision for the students appearing for the class 10th board examination in the year 2028. Putting the basic spirit of the National Education Policy 2020 on the ground, the Board has introduced a new blueprint of ‘Scheme of Studies’, under which an effort has been made to completely eliminate the fear of failing in the board examination from the students. It is often seen that many talented students lag behind by a few marks in traditional core subjects like Mathematics, Science or Social Science, due to which their entire year gets wasted or they have to go through the mental stress of compartment examination. Now according to the new rule, if a student fails in any one of these main subjects, then the marks obtained by him in the vocational i.e. skill subject will be replaced with that subject and his final result will be declared as ‘pass’. This new safety net has given great relief not only to the students but also to the parents and teachers.

The Controller of Examinations and Academic Cell of CBSE have made it completely clear that this new examination structure will not be immediately applicable to the students currently studying in class 10th. This change is being implemented in a planned and phased manner so that schools and students get full time for preparation. Students who will enroll in class 9th in the academic session 2026-27 will become regular students of class 10th in the academic session 2027-28. This batch will appear in the annual board examination of class 10th in the year 2028. Therefore, this new syllabus and marking system will be completely mandatory and effective for the board candidates of the year 2028. The objective of this change is to teach practical skills to students instead of rote learning and prepare them for future employment-oriented technical fields right from the school level.

According to the new guidelines of CBSE, class 10th students will be made to study a total of 9 academic areas for all-round development, but they will not be put under heavy pressure of examinations. Board level final national examination will be conducted only for 5 main subjects. These 5 compulsory board subjects will include two languages, out of which at least one has been made mandatory to be an Indian regional language. Apart from this, Mathematics, General Science and Social Science will come under the main written board examination. The remaining 4 compulsory areas include third language, arts education, health and physical education and vocational education. The objective of these four additional areas is to provide a balanced development of the student’s personality so that he is not limited to only bookish knowledge but can also become proficient in creativity, physical fitness and practical understanding.

Vocational education has been compulsorily included in the new curriculum, for which students have been given two clear options according to their interest and future plans. The first option is for students who do not want to go deep into a particular technical area, they can opt for ‘Skill Development’. The assessment of skill development will be entirely through internal examination and project work at the school level. In this, the student will have to score only minimum 33 percent marks and he will get the passing certificate at the school level itself, there will be no separate examination of the board for this. The second option is for students who want to specialize in modern technical and professional streams. They can choose any one of the 22 official skill subjects notified by CBSE. Students choosing these 22 subjects will have to appear for theory and practical board exams in class 10th and its marksheet will be added to the main board marksheet.

In the list of 22 professional subjects approved by CBSE, priority has been given to the most modern and in-demand areas of the 21st century. These include subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information Technology, Financial Markets, Introduction to Tourism, Beauty and Wellness, Agriculture, Food Production, Front Office Operations, Banking and Insurance, Marketing and Sales, Healthcare, Automotive, Retail, Security, Multimedia, and Design Thinking. These subjects are taught under the National Skills Qualifications Framework i.e. NSQF. Students who qualify the board exams of these subjects will also get National Skill Certificate recognized by the Central Government, which will prove to be very helpful in getting direct admission in higher education and various vocational diploma courses later on.

The most important point of this entire policy is how this replacement process will be implemented while preparing the result. If a student has chosen any one of these 22 vocational subjects as his additional sixth subject and does not obtain a minimum of 33 percent marks in any one of the subjects Mathematics, Science or Social Science in the Class 10th main board examination, then the computer based result system will automatically substitute the marks of the skill subject in place of that failed subject. For example, if a student fails in Mathematics but has scored good marks in Artificial Intelligence or Information Technology, then AI marks will be added in place of Mathematics marks in the total of his/her last 5 compulsory subjects. With this, the mark sheet of the student will not be marked as ‘compartment’ or ‘fail’ and he will be directly eligible for promotion to class 11th. However, regarding language subjects, the board has made it clear that it will be necessary for the student to pass at least in both the compulsory languages so that the basic communication ability is not affected.

While implementing the new structure, CBSE has taken special care to ensure that students are not burdened with unnecessary books and additional syllabus. For this, the board has completely removed many old and heavy modules from the regular syllabus of classes 9th and 10th. The subject ‘Individuals in Society’ has been completely deleted from the Class 9 syllabus from the session 2026-27. Along with this, separate complex parts of ‘Computational Thinking and AI module’ for general students of class 9th have been removed and given an integrated form. At the same time, in the session 2027-28, environmental education i.e. ‘Environmental Education’ has been abolished as a separate subject for the students of class 10th, because its essential principles have been included in the chapters of science and social sciences only. This subject reduction will allow students ample time to focus on core subjects and practical skills.

This step of CBSE is a big signal of moving away from the exam-centric thinking in Indian school education towards competency-based education. Now students will not have to study under the fear that if their marks are less in any one difficult subject, their future will be bleak. Students of 2028 batch and their parents are already being advised to choose vocational subjects as per their interest very thoughtfully while taking admission in class 9th. Subjects like coding, data, design or financial literacy will not only act as a security blanket in the exams but will also lay a solid and strong foundation towards career building and becoming self-reliant after 12th.
