A very big and sensational action by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against corruption has come to light from Jammu and Kashmir. On Friday (July 17), the CBI has arrested an assistant engineer of Jammu and Kashmir Public Works Department (PWD) red handed while taking a bribe of Rs 30 thousand. This sudden and major action taken by the country’s top investigating agency has created a stir in the entire department and administrative corridor. The accused engineer is facing a serious allegation of illegally demanding money in lieu of clearing the compensation amount for the house of a local citizen which was damaged under the Central Government’s ambitious scheme ‘Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana’ (PMGSY).
According to the information given by the official spokesperson of CBI, the arrested accused engineer was directly associated with the ongoing infrastructure construction works under PMGSY in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir and was posted on the important post of Assistant Engineer in PWD.
A scam was made regarding compensation of Rs 10 lakh.
According to official information received from CBI, the foundation of this entire case was laid after a written complaint lodged on July 16, 2026. The complainant had made serious allegations in his application stating that during the construction work of the PMGSY road project being built between Thathri to Kathawa in Doda district, his private house was badly damaged due to the use of heavy machines. Under government rules, a huge compensation amount of about Rs 10 lakh was to be sanctioned in favor of the complainant in lieu of this loss. The victim had been making rounds of government offices for a long time to get this legitimate compensation, but his file was being deliberately stalled.
Deal finalized from Rs 50 thousand to Rs 30 thousand, CBI laid a trap
The victim alleges that in exchange for forwarding the official file of compensation and releasing the payment amount in the bank account, the accused assistant engineer made a direct deal with him. The engineer fearlessly demanded a hefty bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant. However, the complainant was not in a position to pay such a huge amount and protested against it. After this, a closed-door negotiation took place between the two, in which the engineer finally agreed to reduce the bribe amount and the final deal was finalized for Rs 30,000.
Soon after this the victim informed the CBI about this corruption. The CBI conducted a preliminary investigation into the facts of the complaint on July 16 itself and immediately laid a trap after finding the matter to be true. On Friday, as soon as the complainant came to hand over the chemical-laden cash of Rs 30,000 to the accused assistant engineer as per the agreed deal, the CBI special team, which was already in ambush, caught the accused red-handed. CBI spokesperson has clarified that after the red-handed arrest, the accused engineer is being detained and thoroughly interrogated. The agency has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and started further detailed legal investigation.
