Chandigarh – The Global Sikh Council (GSC), representing national Sikh organizations from 32 countries, has strongly condemned the controversial law called 'Bill-21' implemented by the Canadian province of Quebec and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN NHRC). ) and has urged the Canadian federal government to immediately amend the controversial law that prevents Sikhs working in the public sector from wearing religious symbols in offices and at work.

The GSC said the law directly violates the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which the Government of Canada is a signatory. For this reason, the Canadian federal government and international human rights organizations have demanded immediate action on this condemnable matter.

In this statement, Council President Lady Singh Dr. Kanwaljit Kaur, OBE emphasized that the Constitution of Canada guarantees freedom of religion to all citizens of the country. Furthermore, Canada has ratified United Nations treaties that commit it to protecting racial and religious rights. He said Quebec's law justifies discrimination against its citizens based on their religious beliefs and violates their basic constitutional rights.

He criticized the Quebec government, saying the law sets a dangerous precedent by allowing the provincial government to violate religious expression and allowing the administration to decide what its residents can and cannot wear.

Dr. Kanwaljit Kaur has called on the UNHRC, civil liberties organizations, Canadian parliamentarians and human rights organizations to speak out against this attack on religious freedom in Quebec. He also appealed to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to join the protest against the controversial Bill-21 and challenge this law in the International Court to provide proper justice to the Sikhs living there.

Notably, under the guise of secularism, 'Bill 21' of the province of Quebec requires teachers, police officers, lawyers and other public sector employees to wear their religious symbols such as headscarves for Muslims, turbans for Sikhs, yarmulkes for Jews. Is. Prohibits Christians from wearing the cross.

Council President Dr. Kanwaljeet Kaur said that 'Bill 21' is a flagrant violation of the freedom of public expression and religion enshrined in the Constitution of Canada. The Global Sikh Council has called for the immediate repeal of Bill 21, which would have given all public servants of all religions, like elected members of the Quebec National Assembly and provincial legislatures, the right to wear religious symbols as an expression of religion.
