Wimbledon 2024: 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz of Spain defeated 37-year-old Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the Wimbledon 2024 men's singles final. Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in this thrilling match played at the Centre Court in London. This is Carlos Alcaraz's second title at Wimbledon.
The 2023 Wimbledon final was played between the two and that too was won by Alcaraz. With this, 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic missed out on making history. If he had won the title now, he would have become the oldest player to do so in Wimbledon history.
The final match lasted for 2 hours and 27 minutes
This title match between Alcarez and Djokovic lasted for 2 hours and 27 minutes. Alcarez dominated the match from the beginning. He won the first 2 sets. After which Djokovic showed aggressive attitude in the third set but could not win the game.
The third set was very exciting, in which Alcaraz was ahead 5-4 but Djokovic made a strong comeback. He took the set to a tiebreak at a score of 6-6 but here again Alcaraz dominated. Alcaraz won the set 7-4 in the tiebreaker and won the third set 7-6 to win the title.
Alcarez has never lost a Grand Slam final to Djokovic
It was not easy to defeat Carlos Alcarez. The reason for this is Alcarez's brilliant performance in the finals. The Spanish star has played 4 Grand Slam finals so far and has won all of them. So far he has not lost a single final. 21-year-old Alcarez is the youngest player to win a Grand Slam trophy on all three types of courts – grass, clay and hard.
Alcarez won his first Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open. After which he won the Wimbledon title in 2023. Alcarez won his third title at the French Open this year. Now he has won Wimbledon for the second time and his fourth Grand Slam overall.
Djokovic needs one title to make history
Djokovic and former Australian women's star Margaret Court are tied for the most Grand Slam singles titles. The two have won a combined 24 Grand Slam singles titles. However, Margaret won 13 of these titles before the Open Era. The Open era in tennis began in the year 1968.
If Djokovic wins another Grand Slam, he will create history. This was the 37th Grand Slam singles final of Djokovic's tennis career. Which is the most by any player in the Open era. He has left Swiss legend Roger Federer and Spanish star Rafael Nadal far behind.
