Cancer Detection: Very easy test for major diseases! Now early cancer screening will be done sitting at home, know the new technology and method

Cancer ranks second among the deadly diseases worldwide, and the biggest reason behind this is late detection of the disease. In most cases, patients approach doctors when the cancer has reached the third or fourth stage, where treatment becomes complex and extremely expensive. To end this challenge, modern health science and biomedical research have taken a historic leap. Now, before complex biopsies and painful procedures, patients can undergo early screening for many types of cancer from the comfort of their homes (Home-based Cancer Screening).

Global health organizations and research institutions have developed simple, non-invasive test kits that work just like pregnancy test kits or COVID-19 rapid antigen tests. With the help of these kits, early cancer cells, DNA mutations and specific protein biomarkers present in the body can be identified from samples collected at home. This technology is proving to be a boon especially for those people living in rural and remote areas who hesitate in going to the hospital.

This new method of testing for cancer at home is based on the body’s natural fluids and excretions. It does not require any needles or complicated machinery. At present, primary testing facility at home is available mainly on the basis of four types of samples:

  • Saliva and oral swab test: For mouth, throat and head-neck cancer, the patient only has to give his saliva sample in a sterile tube. This test examines the genetic changes in cells and the DNA of human papillomavirus (HPV).

  • Stool-Based DNA Test (Stool DNA / FIT Kit): Occult blood and DNA from tumor cells in the stool sample are used to detect colorectal (intestinal) cancer. This procedure is completely painless and significantly reduces the need for colonoscopy.

  • Urine Biomarker Test: Specific protein and RNA fragments released in urine are tested to detect early signs of bladder and prostate cancer.

  • Self-Sampling Vaginal Swab: To prevent cervical cancer, women can test for high-risk HPV strains by collecting swabs in the privacy of their own homes.

Oncology experts say that cancer treatment is possible, provided it is detected on time. If cancer is identified in Stage-1, then with modern chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted surgery, the patient’s survival rate for 5 years becomes more than 90 percent. After reaching stage-4, this probability reduces to only 15 to 20 percent.

Home screening detects cellular disturbances in the body months or years before a tumor becomes large. When the home test results are positive or questionable, one can immediately consult a specialist oncologist for detailed diagnostic testing (such as PET scan, MRI or biopsy). This not only saves the life of the patient but also provides relief from the financial burden of lakhs of rupees on the family.

According to medical experts, home-based cancer screening kit is accessible to every common person, but certain categories of people should make it a part of their regular health checkup:

All people over the age of 40 who have a family history of a parent or sibling with any type of cancer should undergo regular screening due to genetic predisposition. Apart from this, people who consume tobacco, cigarette, beedi or gutkha for a long time should use oral cancer screening kit every six months.

If a person is experiencing rapid weight loss without any reason, persistent fatigue, chronic cough, blood in the stool or urine, or any unusual lump in the body, then they should immediately seek early testing without any delay.

It is very important to understand here that there is a difference between ‘screening test’ and ‘confirmed diagnosis’. The home-based kit tells you whether cancer-related biomarkers are present in your body, but it is not final medical confirmation. If a test result is positive, it does not mean that the patient is terminal; It just means that a detailed medical checkup is now urgently needed.

Instead of panicking if the test result is doubtful, one should contact a recognized cancer hospital or oncologist. Doctors confirm the condition through additional blood tests (such as CA-125, PSA, CEA) and imaging tests. The biggest advantage of home-based testing is that it eliminates the risk of unknowingly spreading the disease and provides the patient an opportunity to take steps in the right direction at the right time.
