Researchers at IIT Mandi have found that groundwater in the industrial town of Baddi-Barotiwala in Himachal Pradesh contains cancer-causing particles. According to the research, several cases of cancer and kidney disease have been reported between 2013 and 2018 due to contaminated groundwater. Researchers have emphasized on monitoring industrial pollutants such as zinc, lead, nickel and chromium.

What did the study say?

The study said, “In India, groundwater is used extensively for agriculture and domestic consumption. Rapid urbanisation, industrialisation and population growth have increased groundwater use and degraded its quality. Serious water quality problems have been reported in northern India. Similar problems have been observed in the Baddi-Barotiwala industrial town of Himachal Pradesh, where industrialisation has contaminated groundwater with toxic metals that exceed acceptable limits. Several cases of cancer and kidney disease have been reported between 2013 and 2018 due to reliance on untreated groundwater.
