Canada Work Visa: Why did Canada end the work-permit policy? Indians will be affected | News India

Under Canada's new policy, people on visitor visas can no longer apply for work permits from within the country. This policy was made in August 2020 during the Covid pandemic. At that time borders around the world were closed and many people were unable to return to their country.

Cannot apply in this manner

Under this policy, people arriving on a visit visa could apply for a Canada work permit without leaving Canada. Those who had a work permit in the past 12 months and changed their status to “visit” could also work legally while waiting for a new work permit.

Implementation of this policy to maintain the security of the immigration system

The policy was scheduled to remain in place until February 28, 2025, but has now been scrapped. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says the move is to control the number of temporary residents and maintain the security of the immigration system.

Will the applications made before 28th August be beneficial?

Canada has said that applications made before August 28 will still be completed under the same process. The reason for ending this policy early is that some people were taking advantage of this policy and misleading foreign nationals to work in Canada without permission.

New rules announced!

With the end of this policy, Canada has also announced some new restrictions on temporary foreign workers. On August 26, the Canadian government announced that the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process for some low-wage applicants will be closed by September 26, 2024. This will apply to areas where the unemployment rate is 6% or more.

Canada has also decided that employers cannot hire foreign workers for up to 10% of their total workforce, and the tenure for workers working under the “low wage” category has been reduced from two years to one year.
