Edmonton: Canada has decided to reduce the number of international study permits and tighten work permit qualifications. This decision will come into effect from 2025. Canada's Immigration Minister Marc Miller on Thursday announced several immigration reforms aimed at handling the influx of international students and addressing labour shortages. According to the new announcements, study permits for international students have been reduced by 10 percent.

The government plans to reduce the annual cap of 485,000 permits in 2024 to 437,000 in 2025. This cap will remain in place until at least 2026. Similarly, the government also plans to revise the post-graduation work permit program to ensure that it balances with labour market demands. Currently, many international students are eligible for work permits after graduation. They can stay and work in Canada, but this will not be possible due to the new strict rules. This decision has been taken after growing public pressure to address Canada's housing crisis and rising cost of living.
