Supreme Court judge Justice BR Gavai has once again expressed displeasure over the indiscipline of the apex court. He termed the Supreme Court as the most undisciplined place and compared it with the High Courts. This statement of Justice Gavai has come at an important time, when he is going to become the Chief Justice of India in May 2025.
He praised the High Courts and said that he had never seen such indiscipline as the Supreme Court. According to Live Law, Justice Gavai said, “I have been a judge in Bombay, Nagpur and Aurangabad benches, but the indiscipline here is unparalleled.”
Justice Gavai had expressed similar concerns in September last year also. At that time he had expressed his displeasure at lawyers repeatedly interrupting the debate, saying the Supreme Court was the “most undisciplined court” for people coming from higher courts.
Preparation to become CJI
Justice Gavai will assume the post after the retirement of current CJI Sanjiv Khanna on May 13, 2025. The special thing is that he can become the second Dalit CJI of India, whereas the first Dalit CJI was Justice KG Balakrishna, who retired on 11 May 2010.
Justice Gavai’s statements underline that there is a need for reform in the Supreme Court, so that the functioning of the court can become more effective and disciplined.
