Calcutta High Court takes a strict view on traveling abroad for eye treatment; asked- what is wrong with the government hospital; Calcutta High Court takes a strict view on traveling abroad for eye treatment; Asks what is wrong with government hospitals.

Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary and MP of West Bengal’s ruling party Trinamool Congress (TMC), has suffered a major setback on the legal front. Abhishek Banerjee, who reached the court seeking permission to go abroad (America) for the treatment of his eyes, had to face strong displeasure from the Calcutta High Court. While hearing the petition, the court questioned in a very harsh tone that when world class medical facilities are available in the country and the state itself, then what is the need to go abroad again and again in the name of treatment? This strict stance of the court has created panic in the TMC camp.

Why not trust government hospitals? Court reminded of responsibility

During the hearing of the case, the Justice, while referring to the health infrastructure, said that the state government itself issues huge advertisements about its medical system and the claims of government hospitals. In such a situation, the top leaders and public representatives of the state should set an example and turn to SSKM or other big government medical colleges of the country for treatment. The court clearly said that if the general public can get treatment in these government hospitals, then why should different criteria be adopted for VIP leaders?

Argument of central agencies: expressed fear that the investigation will be affected

In the court, lawyers of investigating agencies like Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also strongly opposed Abhishek Banerjee’s going abroad. The central agencies argued before the court that the leader was being interrogated and investigated in several sensitive cases like teacher recruitment scam and coal smuggling. In such a situation, the investigation process may be slowed down or affected due to his going abroad. The court listened to these arguments of the investigating agencies very seriously and after hearing both the sides, reserved its decision, which has spoiled Banerjee’s plans to travel abroad.

Bengal politics heats up: Opposition targets, TMC comes to the rescue

After this harsh comment of the High Court, the political temperature has once again reached sky high in West Bengal. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Left parties (CPIM) cornered Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government, saying that this is proof that TMC leaders themselves do not trust the government hospitals of Bengal and the health infrastructure ‘Swasthya Sathi’ created by them. On the other hand, Trinamool Congress spokespersons rejected the opposition’s allegations and said that Abhishek Banerjee’s eye injury is very serious, for which he has already been treated outside and the right to health should be kept away from politics.
