Rajya Sabha by-election: The Election Commission on Tuesday announced by-elections for six vacant Rajya Sabha seats in four states on December 20. The three vacancies in Andhra Pradesh occurred when YSR Congress Party members Venkatraman Rao Mopidevi, Bida Mastan Rao Yadav and Raiga Krishnaiah resigned from the Upper House in August. Yadav and Krishnaiah’s tenure as Rajya Sabha members was scheduled to end on June 21, 2028, while Mopidevi was scheduled to retire on June 21, 2026.

This seat has become vacant after Sujit Kumar left the seat in Odisha. After this he was suspended by Biju Janata Dal. His tenure was to end on April 2, 2026. In April, the Jawahar government of the Trinamool Congress had resigned after the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. He was due to retire in April 2026.

BJP’s Krishnalal Panwar recently won the assembly elections, prompting him to vacate his Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana. At present, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh and BJP in Odisha will maintain their dominance in the Rajya Sabha by-elections after the assembly elections.
