Business: Slight fall in Sensex-Nifty, rise in midcap-smallcap stocks.

Huge fluctuations were seen in the Indian stock market since this morning. The indices closed the day with a slight decline due to weakness in index heavyweights Reliance and HDFC Bank amid a bullish environment in IT stocks.

However, midcap and smallcap stocks remained bullish. The stock market will remain closed on Wednesday on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. FIIA traded in the Indian stock market today at Rs. Net sales stood at Rs 5,579 crore, while DII posted Rs 5,579 crore. Net purchase of Rs 4,609 crore.

In a highly volatile environment, Sensex opened 42 points lower today and made an intra-day high of 84,648 and low of 84,098. In this way, after a total fluctuation of 550 points, the Sensex fell by 33 points or 0.04 percent and closed at 84,266. Nifty also opened 22 points lower and after hitting an intraday high of 25,907 and low of 25,739, finally closed at 25,796, down 14 points or 0.05 per cent. Thus, a total fluctuation of 168 points was seen in Nifty. In the broader market, mid-cap and small-cap stocks outperformed. The BSE mid-cap index closed 132 points or 0.27 per cent higher at 49,484, while the small-cap index closed 319 points or 0.56 per cent higher at 57,450.

Of the total 4,054 stocks traded on BSE today, 2,240 advanced, 1,743 declined and 71 closed flat. Market capitalization of companies listed on BSE today increased to Rs. 474.86 lakh crore i.e. 5.67 trillion dollars, which yesterday was Rs. Rs 474.35 lakh crore. An increase of Rs 51,000 crore is visible. 13 out of 30 Sensex stocks and 21 out of 50 Nifty stocks closed with gains today. The volatility index fell 6.25 percent today to 11.99 from below 12.

Of the 14 sector indices on Nifty, seven closed with gains while seven closed with losses. The Nifty IT index closed up 1.17 per cent and the Media index closed up 1.60 per cent, while the Nifty Oil & Gas index declined 0.67 per cent.

BSE SME IPO index jumped 1,576 points

SME IPO stocks again witnessed a rise today as the BSE SME IPO index closed 1,576 points or 1.54 per cent higher at 1,03,952 after a total gain of 1,823 points during the day. However, the index is still down 11,039 points from its all-time high of 1,14,991.
