Business: Nifty rises for the 14th consecutive day, M-cap reaches new high of Rs 465.49 lakh crore | News India

However, Nifty closed merely 1.15 points higher today due to gains in banking giants ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank.

However, this resulted in the Nifty rising for the 14th consecutive session today, setting a new record. On the other hand, the Sensex closed down by just 4.41 points, snapping a 10-session rally. Investors adopted a cautious stance today as US manufacturing data is due later tonight and US employment data on Friday will give an indication of how much the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates, due to which the stock market witnessed an overall dry mood. The indices traded lower throughout the day and gained slightly in the last hour.

The volatility index fell 0.96 percent to 13.93 today. 9 out of 14 sectoral indices on Nifty closed with a decline. Nifty Media fell 1.44 percent, Metal 0.56 percent, Realty 0.52 percent and Oil & Gas also fell 0.52 percent. On the other hand, Nifty Bank closed up 0.54 percent, Financial Services 0.82 percent, Private Bank 0.46 percent and Consumer Durables 1.31 percent.

After opening 93 points higher initially, the Sensex today hit an intra-day high of 82,675 and a low of 82,400 in a highly volatile environment and after a total fluctuation of 275 points, the Sensex closed at 82,555, down by just 4.41 points or 0.005 per cent. Nifty too made an intraday high of 25,321 and a low of 25,235 after opening 35 points higher and after a total fluctuation of 86 points, closed at 25,280, down by just 1.15 points or 0.004 per cent. Mid cap and small cap stocks outperformed today. The BSE mid-cap index closed 92 points or 0.19 per cent higher at 49,141 today, while the small-cap index closed 301 points or 0.54 per cent higher at 56,061. The market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies today rose to Rs. 465.49 lakh crore, a new record high. Compared to yesterday's Rs. 464.85 lakh crore, an increase of Rs. 64,000 crore. The BSE SME IPO index today closed 3,347 points or 3.06 per cent lower at 1,06,017.
