Stock markets in Asia and Europe rose after US Federal Reserve meeting minutes hinted at an interest rate cut next month and as a result Indian stock market indices also closed higher.

The volatility index fell 2.49 percent to 13 today. 6 out of 14 sector indices on Nifty closed with a decline today. Banking and financial sector stocks rose today after yesterday's decline, after which the Nifty Bank index rose 0.59 percent, Financial Services 0.45 percent, PSU Bank 0.67 percent and Private Bank 0.57 percent. Apart from this, FMCG stocks also rose for the second consecutive day, due to which the FMCG index rose 0.62 percent. Apart from this, Auto, IT, Media, Pharma, Healthcare and Oil and Gas indices saw a decline of 0.09 percent to 0.23 percent.

After initially opening 302 points higher at 81,207, the Sensex made an intra-day high of 81,236 and a low of 80,954. After falling a total of 282 points during the day, the Sensex closed at 81,053, up 148 points or 0.18 per cent. Nifty also opened 93 points higher and made an intraday high of 24,867 and a low of 24,784. Thus, after a total fluctuation of 83 points, the Nifty finally closed at 24,811, up 41 points or 0.17 per cent. Midcap and smallcap stocks performed better today as well. The BSE Midcap index closed at 48,643, up 325 points or 0.67 per cent. The Small Cap index hit a new record high of 55,773 today and ended the day higher by 261 points or 0.47 per cent at 55,598. The rally in the BSE SME IPO index continued today and the index also hit a new high of 1,06,433 for the second consecutive day today. The index closed at 1,06,113 at the end of the day, up 1,610 points or 1.54 per cent. Out of a total of 4,053 stocks traded on the BSE today, 2,451 rose, 1,513 declined and 89 closed steady. 342 stocks hit a fifty-two week high today, while 15 stocks hit a fifty-two week low. 15 stocks hit an upper circuit while 3 stocks hit a lower circuit. The market capitalisation of companies listed on the BSE today rose to Rs. It reached the level of Rs 460.52 lakh crore or $ 5.49 trillion, which is an increase of Rs 1.28 lakh crore from yesterday's Rs 459.24 lakh crore. Today, 17 out of 30 Sensex stocks and 27 out of 50 Nifty stocks closed with gains.

FIIs have invested Rs. 1,371 crores net buying

Today FII changed its stance in the Indian stock market by Rs. 100 crores. Net purchase of Rs. 1,371 crores, while DII made a net purchase of Rs. 2,971 crores. Along with this, the figure of net selling by FIIA in the month of August also decreased to Rs. 32,531 crores and the figure of net purchase of DII was Rs. 44,183 crores. Out of the total 14 sessions in the month of August, FIIs have made net purchases in only 4 sessions including today.
