By the first week of August this year, the number of vehicles recalled by vehicle manufacturers has surpassed the figures of the last two years.
According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobiles, out of the total 7,20,000 vehicles recalled by the auto industry in 2024, 96 percent are two-wheelers. This figure is important as two-wheelers dominate the auto industry. Which has an 81 percent share in the domestic market. A total of 2,88,765 and 2,85,000 vehicles were recalled in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The number of vehicle recalls has increased due to the implementation of the vehicle recall policy by the government in the year 2021.
Suzuki Motorcycle India ranks fifth in the country in terms of two-wheelers. 3,88,500 vehicles have been recalled from the market by this manufacturer. Which vehicles are on top of the recall list? The Japanese auto brand has issued a notice to customers of Access 125, Avensis 125, Burgman 125 models and asked them to return them to the service center for rectification due to manufacturing defect. When these vehicles move, due to vibration in the engine, sometimes the high tension wires get bent to one side and break. The company said that due to this defect the engine stops, due to which these Suzuki models are failing. In the seven months till July, more vehicles have been recalled from the market than the number of vehicles sold by the company in India.
The second name in this list is also of a Japanese auto brand. The Yamaha brand has recalled more than three lakh of its two-wheelers. These include Ray ZR FI 125 and Fuschino CI 125. Which were manufactured in India itself. Like Suzuki Motorcycle India, Yamaha has also recalled more vehicles than the vehicles sold in January-July this year.
After two-wheelers, if we talk about the passenger vehicle (PV) segment, luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz is also included in this list. The carmaker is also at the top of the list of product recalls. The company has recalled 15 thousand vehicles so far this year. This includes a total of 38 models. Mercedes-Benz issued a warning in May this year. It was said that models including GLE 450, EQS, GLC, AMGSL, AMGLA, S-Class, E-Class and QB are prone to sudden loss of propulsion, loss of traction as well as sudden fire if not serviced.
Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor, which have a 55 percent share in the passenger vehicle segment in India, have also recalled 12,000 cars and sports utility vehicles. Hyundai has recalled 9,500 vehicles of the Ionic V, Creta and Verna models. Maruti Suzuki has recalled 2,555 cars of the Alto K10 model.
