Bus accident in Sri Lanka, two students of Defense University killed, 39 injured

Colombo, 02 November (HS). Two girl students of Kotelawala Defense University died and 39 others were injured in a bus accident in Sri Lanka. Among the injured are 15 girls and 14 boys. The accident occurred at Ambagus Junction on Dunhinda-Badulla Road at around 7:45 am on Friday.

According to the news of Daily News, this bus was carrying final year students of Defense University. Suddenly this bus collided with a dam on the roadside and overturned. The injured admitted to Badulla Teaching Hospital include three university lecturers, two army officers and 34 students. It is reported that all of them were going by bus to Randenigala for a training program after spending the previous night in Passara. This bus met with an accident in Badulla area. Badulla DIG Sujith Vedamulla said the investigation into the accident has been handed over to Chief Inspector Chanaka Chiranjeev Wijeratna and Traffic Inspector Jayatunga.

According to the Daily Mirror newspaper, the Defense Secretary said today that the injured would be airlifted to Badulla Teaching Hospital in Colombo as soon as possible. The Sri Lanka Air Force has been instructed to keep helicopters on standby at Diyatalawa base to airlift the injured to Colombo. The girl students who lost their lives in the accident were identified as residents of Kurunegala and Nivithigala. The Vice Chancellor of the University said that the University will help in the last rites of both the girl students.
