Bumper recruitment on 3,548 posts for graduates in Railways, great salary and a golden opportunity for a secure career; Know the application process and important conditions


Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has presented an excellent government job opportunity for graduate youth across the country. This recruitment has brought a new light of hope for the candidates who have been dreaming of a permanent and secure career in Railways for a long time. The formal process of filling 3,548 important non-technical and administrative posts lying vacant in various zonal railway offices and production units under the Ministry of Railways of the Central Government has been started. This recruitment drive will not only help the youth in getting a prestigious position but will also ensure a secure future with better pay-scale, allowances and government facilities. Preparations for conducting the examination at centers under various state and regional boards across the country have intensified, which will facilitate local youth to appear for the examination in their own nearby cities. Tremendous enthusiasm is being seen among the competitive students regarding this big opportunity and the atmosphere of preparation is heated from coaching centers to digital libraries.

According to the latest advertisement released by RRB, recruitment will be done on a total of 3,548 posts. These posts mainly include major categories like Commercial Apprentice, Station Master, Goods Train Manager (formerly Goods Guard), Senior Clerk cum Typist, and Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk. The Railway Administration has set clear quota of posts for Unreserved, Other Backward Classes (OBC), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Economically Weaker Section (EWS) while strictly following the reservation rules for all sections. This division of posts in Railways has been done under the major railway zones of the entire country such as Northern Railway, East Central Railway, Western Railway, Southern Railway and Central Railway. Availability of vacancies at the regional level will provide an opportunity to local youth to serve in their home area or nearby divisions. According to the notification, all eligible candidates can visit the official websites of Railway Recruitment Board and submit applications as per their interest and preference.

To participate in this recruitment process, it is mandatory for the candidates to have graduation in any faculty from any recognized university or institute. Whether the candidate has obtained his/her degree in Arts, Science, Commerce or Engineering, they all are fully eligible for this recruitment. However, computer typing proficiency has been made mandatory for some specific technical or clerical posts like Senior Clerk cum Typist, in which typing speed of 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi is required. Those students waiting for the final year results, whose result is not declared till the last date of application, will not be able to participate in this process. Along with educational certificates, it is necessary for the candidate to be completely mentally and physically healthy because Railways is very strict regarding the medical standards of its employees.

Railway Recruitment Board has fixed the minimum age limit of 18 years and maximum age limit of 33 or 36 years (depending on the general relaxation available under the rules) for general category candidates. As per government service rules, special relaxation in upper age limit has been provided to reserved categories. Candidates belonging to Other Backward Class (OBC Non-Creamy Layer) will get three years relaxation, while candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe category will be given the benefit of five years relaxation. Special age relaxations have also been implemented for disabled people and ex-servicemen as per rules. Age will be calculated on the basis of prescribed cut-off date, which is clearly mentioned in the notification. Candidates are advised to use only their 10th (Matriculation) mark sheet or original birth certificate for age verification as any discrepancy may lead to cancellation of candidature.

Selected candidates will be given a very attractive pay scale on the basis of 7th Central Pay Commission. According to the posts, appointments will be made under Pay Matrix Level-5 and Level-6. The starting basic salary will range from approximately Rs 29,200 to Rs 35,400 per month. Apart from the basic salary, the selected employees will also be paid Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance (TA) and Railway’s specific running allowance or night duty allowance as per the rules of the Central Government. Including all these allowances, the in-hand gross salary of a newly appointed employee can reach from Rs 45,000 to more than Rs 60,000 per month in the initial days itself. Along with this, Indian Railways also provides free railway pass, PTO, excellent medical facilities and government accommodation facilities to its employees and their dependents, which makes this job many times more secure and prestigious than the private sector.

The selection process in Railways has been kept completely transparent and merit based, in which there is no provision for any kind of interview. The entire recruitment process will be completed mainly in three phases. The first phase will be a Computer Based Examination (CBT-1), which will act as a screening test for all the posts. In this, 100 objective questions related to General Awareness, Mathematics, and General Intelligence and Reasoning will be asked, which will be given 90 minutes to solve. Candidates selected on the basis of merit in CBT-1 will be called for the second stage i.e. CBT-2, in which the difficulty level of questions will be higher and a total of 120 questions will be asked. The final merit list will be prepared on the basis of CBT-2 marks only. For those posts for which Typing Test or Aptitude Test (like Psycho Test for Station Master) is mandatory, additional skill test will be conducted. Finally, final appointment letters will be issued after document verification and stringent medical examination. Negative marking will also be applicable in the exam, where one-third (1/3) marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Interested and eligible candidates are required to apply online only through the official websites of Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). To apply, first of all the candidate has to do his/her primary registration on the portal, in which it is necessary to enter the mobile number and email ID and get the OTP verification done. After this, personal details, educational qualification and address details have to be entered. Candidates will have to upload their latest passport size color photograph and signature in the prescribed size and format. The application fee for General and OBC category candidates has been kept at Rs 500, out of which the prescribed amount is returned to the bank account on appearing in the CBT-1 examination. Whereas for SC, ST, Women and EWS category candidates, the fee has been fixed at Rs 250, which is fully refundable upon appearing in the examination. All entries should be checked thoroughly before final submission of the application form and a printout of the filled form should be preserved for future reference.
