Key Indian stock market indices today closed at all-time highs with gains ahead of interest rate decisions by the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan on Wednesday.
The BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices continued their upward trend today, hitting new record highs and outperforming. The initial recovery was lost after a sell-off was witnessed in the last hour of the market. Consumer durables and auto stocks declined today while FMCG, pharma and healthcare stocks declined.
After opening 6 points down initially, the Sensex hit an early low of 81,230. The rally continued thereafter and the index hit an intraday high of 81,815. However, the index suddenly started moving downwards after around 2.40 pm and by the end of the session, it had lost nearly 400 points. Thus, after falling a total of 585 points during the day, the Sensex finally closed 99 points or 0.12 per cent higher at 81,455, which is also its new highest closing level. The Nifty had opened three points higher and then touched a high of 24,971 and a low of 24,798 at the end of the day to close 21 points or 0.09 per cent higher at 24,857, its highest ever level. The Nifty fluctuated by 173 points during the day.
The BSE Mid-cap index hit a new intraday high of 48,383 today and ended the day higher by 132 points or 0.27 per cent at 48,220. The BSE Small-cap index also hit a new intraday high of 55,498 today and ended the day higher by 483 points or 0.88 per cent at 55,411. After six consecutive days of gains, the BSE SME IPO index closed at 1,00,792, down 888 points or 0.87 per cent.
Today, the market capitalization of companies listed on the BSE reached a new record high of Rs. 460.92 lakh crore or $5.50 trillion. This figure is up from yesterday's level of Rs. 459.92 lakh crore, showing an increase of Rs. 1 lakh crore. Out of a total of 4,023 stocks traded on the BSE today, 2,295 advanced, 1,607 declined and 121 closed steady. 351 stocks hit a 52-week high today, while 13 stocks hit a 52-week low. Four stocks hit upper circuit and lower circuit today.
Out of the 30 stocks listed on the Sensex, 16 closed higher while 14 closed lower. Out of the 50 stocks listed on the Nifty, 21 closed higher while 29 closed lower. Out of the 14 sectoral indices on the Nifty, 9 closed higher while 5 closed lower. The Nifty Auto index rose 0.58 per cent, Media 0.66 per cent, Consumer Durables 1.12 per cent and Oil & Gas 0.57 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty FMCG fell 1.11 per cent, Pharma 0.62 per cent and Healthcare 0.78 per cent.

Sensex rose 0.12 per cent, Midcap index rose 0.27 per cent and Smallcap rose 0.88 per cent.
SME IPO index falls 888 points after six consecutive days of gains
Consumer durables index up 1.12 per cent, FMCG down 1.11 per cent
FIIs net sell Rs. 5,598 crore
FIIA today made a net sale of Rs. 5,598 crore in the Indian stock market, while DII made a net purchase of Rs. 5,565 crore. Along with this, the figure of net purchase made by FIIA in the month of July also decreased to Rs. 1.55 crore. 8,870 crore, while the figure of net purchase made by DII increased to Rs. 20,119 crore.
