British Foreign Secretary David Lammy may visit India for FTA

London: After the historic victory of the Labour Party in Britain, Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke to Indian PM Narendra Modi on Saturday. During this, the Prime Ministers of both the countries also discussed the issue of free trade agreement. New British Foreign Secretary David Lammy may visit India this month to take forward the FTA talks between India and Britain.

Britain's Labour Party won a landslide victory with 412 seats in the early parliamentary elections on Friday and returned to power after a decade and a half. PM Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke to senior Labour Party leader and newly appointed Prime Minister Keir Starmer and congratulated him on the victory. Both the leaders expressed their resolve to take forward the India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership during the talks.

Prime Minister Modi invited British PM Starmer to visit India. The Presidents of both countries agreed to work towards finalising the FTA between India and Britain. PM Modi wrote on X, Happy to talk to Keir Starmer. Congratulated him on being elected Prime Minister of Britain. We are committed to strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership and deepening India-UK economic relations for the people of both countries and global good.

Keir Starmer has appointed David Lammy as the Foreign Minister after becoming the Prime Minister. Lammy has been in favor of strengthening India-UK bilateral relations. He described Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar as a 'friend'. The FTA between India and Britain was to be completed by Diwali 2022. But this agreement has not been reached yet. However, as soon as he took over the post of Foreign Minister, David Lammy said that it is an honor for me to be appointed the Minister of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.

David Lammy said in his election speech, “My message to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal is that the Labour Party is ready to move forward.” Let's finally get a free trade deal. David Lammy described India as an economic, technological and cultural superpower, calling it a priority for Britain.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer chaired the first meeting of the new cabinet on Saturday. At this time, he created a 'Mission Delivery Board' for the ministers, so that the changes voted for by the public can be implemented quickly. Addressing reporters at 10 Downing Street after the first cabinet meeting, Starmer said, “I have reminded the entire cabinet that we will be evaluated not by our words, but by our actions. The meeting also discussed how to implement the promises made in the election manifesto. We will have a Mission Delivery Board to fulfill these promises. As soon as he assumed the post of Prime Minister, Keir Starmer spoke to the presidents of many countries of the world on the phone.

Three ministries were handed over to Lisa Nandi of Indian origin

London: Along with the spectacular victory of the Labour Party in the parliamentary elections in Britain, the largest number of leaders of Indian origin have also been elected in this election. Future Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his cabinet, in which 44-year-old Indian-origin Lisa Nandy, who won a landslide victory in the Wigan parliamentary constituency of North-West England, has been given three ministries, as well as important responsibilities. Lisa Nandy has been made the Minister of Culture, Media and Sports. Lisa Nandy was Starmer's rival among the final three contenders in the January 2020 election for the leadership of the Labour Party. Since then she has worked in Starmer's shadow cabinet. Lisa Nandy will now take over the Ministry of Culture from Lucy Fraser of the Sunak cabinet.
