Brasília, 29 October (Hindustan Reporter). Brazil's latest stance has dealt a severe blow to China. Brazil today refused to join China's important Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project. Celso Amorim, special adviser on international affairs to President Lula da Silva, said Brazil has decided not to join Beijing's billion-dollar initiative. It is noteworthy that India is already maintaining distance from this project. Now Brazil has become the second country after India in the BRICS group by announcing this.
Amorim, an adviser to President Lula, told Brazil's leading newspaper 'O Globo' that the Brazilian government wants to take relations with China to a new level without signing a contract for the project. According to the newspaper, Amorim made this statement when he was asked whether Brazil would invest in China's BRI project. He said that the main issue is coordination. This is not an insurance policy to be signed down.
Along with this, Amorim indicated that Brazil should not formally participate in this Chinese project. This Chinese project is about a decade old. It is noteworthy that Amorim took part in a mission to China last week. He met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Invited him to participate in the G-20 leaders' summit next month. This conference is to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 20 November.
It is noteworthy that last Wednesday in Sao Paulo, United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai said that Brazil should be cautious of China's BRI project. Beijing also expressed displeasure over Catherine's statement.
