Brain Rot: Today the Internet has become such an important part of our lives that it is difficult to imagine life without it, but in this world of Internet, there are two things named reels and shorts. The names may be different but the job of both is the same – to waste your time. There is a word used for this insistence on mindlessly scrolling through social media and that is brain rot. Now this word has been declared as Oxford Word of the Year 2024.
Up to 230 percent increase in usage

There is a meme circulating on social media and it is – Take water, you are tired of scrolling, now you need water because this useless scroll is rotting you mentally. The use of the word brain rot has increased by 230 percent in the last year.

If the matter seems complicated, let us understand it in simple language. Do you have a habit of checking your phone after waking up in the morning? Do you suddenly find yourself on social media while checking your phone and then half an hour later you remember you haven’t even gotten out of bed yet? Do you start scrolling reels or shorts on your phone while sitting, standing or lying anywhere? If yes then you are a victim of brain rot.

Algorithms are all games

There is an abundance of content available on social media. If you spend more than 2 seconds on average on a reel or video, the algorithm of the respective app will understand that you like videos in that category, even if you don’t. Now all such reels and content will be spread on your screen.

While scrolling, you don’t even know whether the content you are viewing is for you or not. This is a situation in which we keep scrolling through content without thinking or thinking because that is what is happening on the screen and you are roaming in the world of social media.

Content is being consumed

You think about just a little more time, just a little more reel… but it’s not over until you remember to do something else or mom comes and tells you how many hours you’ve been doing this. The term brain rot refers to this mental rot, where you are consuming low quality content, repetitive content for no reason.

First used in 1854

The term brain rot was coined about 170 years ago. The term was first mentioned in Henry David’s book Walden, written in 1854. Satirizing the shallowness of society, he wrote that when England is trying to eradicate potato rot, why not mental rot?
