Manipur violence: In a terrorist attack on a security forces camp in Manipur's Bishnupur district early Saturday, 2 CRPF jawans were killed and two others were injured, police said as the militants attacked the IRBN (India Reserve Battalion) camp. At Naranasaina in Moirang police station area.
“The militants opened indiscriminate fire from the hill tops targeting the camp. It started around 12.30 am and continued till around 2.15 am. The militants also threw bombs, one of which exploded at a post of CRPF's 128 battalion,” a senior police officer said. He said that the injured included Inspector Jadav Das and Constable Aftab Das, who were hit by shrapnel.
“Both the injured personnel were admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal. They are out of danger,” the officer said.
CRPF personnel were deployed to protect the IRBN camp.
Police said a massive search operation is being conducted to trace the perpetrators of the attack.
“Such actions demonstrate cowardice against dedicated security personnel who work tirelessly day and night to maintain peace and stability in the state. Their sacrifice will not go in vain,” Chief Minister N Biren Singh said while condemning the incident.
Meanwhile, security forces destroyed three bunkers and recovered four firearms during search operations launched in Churachandpur district following the attack on CRPF jawans, police said.
According to a statement issued by Manipur Police, “Search operations and area dominance were carried out by security forces in border and sensitive areas of hill and valley districts”.
Firearms were recovered from Lower Khoirentak, Upper Khoirentak, Heichanglok, Chingfei and Langchingmanbi in Churachandpur district, the statement said, adding, “Three bunkers were also destroyed in these areas.”
These areas are on high hilly terrain and are located near Naransina where the CRPF post was attacked.
Three suspects were arrested in connection with the firing incident at a polling booth in Imphal, while the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Manipur on April 19 was marred by widespread violence, rioting and incidents of booth capturing.
