German luxury vehicle manufacturer BMW India has officially launched the new and more spacious model of its popular entry-level SUV BMW X1 LWB (Long Wheelbase) in the Indian luxury SUV market. Assembled locally at the Chennai plant, the ex-showroom price of this luxury SUV has been set at ₹49.90 lakh, which is ₹1 lakh more affordable than its standard short-wheelbase model. The company has launched this long wheelbase model especially keeping in mind the demand of Indian customers for rear-seat comfort and spacious cabin.

108mm long wheelbase: There will be plenty of legroom and knee-room on the rear seat

The biggest feature of the new BMW X1 LWB is its increased size and cabin space. The overall length of this SUV is 4,616mm and its wheelbase is 2,800mm, which is 108mm longer than the standard model.

The increased wheelbase gives rear passengers 109mm more knee-room and 150mm more legroom. Additionally, the rear seat cushion has been extended by 15mm for better thigh support and the backrest can be reclined up to 28.5 degrees. It has a large boot space of 540 liters, which can be increased to 1,700 liters by folding the rear seats.

Premium interior and high-tech luxury features

The cabin of the car has been equipped with many premium features to give modern technology and luxury feel:

  • Curved Widescreen Display: The dashboard gets a 10.25-inch digital driver display and a 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which works on BMW’s latest operating system 9 (iDrive).

  • Panoramic Sunroof: The largest panoramic glass roof in the segment has been provided to give an open and airy feel to the cabin.

  • Harman Kardon Audio System: Includes a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system for premium sound quality.

  • Digital Connectivity: Through BMW Digital Key Plus, a smartphone or smartwatch can be turned into a digital key and shared with up to 18 users. Along with this, wireless phone charger, ambient lighting and powered front sports seats are also available.

8 Airbags and Advanced ADAS Safety Suite

On the safety front, BMW has not made any compromises in the X1 LWB. For safety, the vehicle has been provided with 8 airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), 360-degree surround view camera, cornering brake control and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.

Apart from this, Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features like Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist are also provided for driver assistance.

Engine, Performance and Competition

BMW X1 LWB has been introduced in sDrive 18Li M Sport variant. It has a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder TwinPower Turbo-Petrol engine, which generates maximum power of 156 PS and peak torque of 230 Nm. This engine comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) and front-wheel drive setup.

In the Indian luxury car market, the new BMW X1 LWB will compete directly with luxury compact SUVs like Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3 and Mini Countryman.
