BJP President JP Nadda will address the 'Dark Day of Democracy' event against Emergency this afternoon

New Delhi, June 25 (HS). Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President and Union Minister JP Nadda will address the 'Dark Day of Democracy' program organized in protest against the Emergency at the party headquarters today at 12:30 pm. This information has been shared by the BJP on its X handle.

It is noteworthy that on the first day of the 18th Lok Sabha, half an hour before the start of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the Emergency. He said that 25 June is not a day to be forgotten. It was on this day that the Constitution was completely rejected. Emergency was imposed on 25 June 1975 for 21 months and it lasted till 21 March 1977. This was the period of arbitrariness of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government. The then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed had declared Emergency on the recommendation of the Congress government led by Indira Gandhi at the Center under Article 352 of the Constitution.

It is worth mentioning that in the 1971 elections, Indira Gandhi defeated the candidate of the United Socialist Party, Raj Narain. Raj Narain filed a case in the Allahabad High Court accusing Indira of corruption and misuse of government machinery and resources. On 12 June 1975, High Court judge Jagmohan Lal Sinha held Indira Gandhi guilty. Her election was declared invalid and she was barred from contesting any election for 6 years. Fearing this, emergency was imposed in the country.
