BJP has 240 seats, yet why is Congress hopeful of forming the government? This happened 35 years ago

Lok Sabha Election Result 2024: The result of the Lok Sabha elections, which the whole country was waiting for, surprised everyone. In the election results, BJP emerged as the largest party, but fell short of the majority and won 240 seats. Although NDA has won 292 seats and seems to be forming the government, Congress is still in full swing and there is a debate on whether a coalition government can be formed in India even after BJP becoming the largest party. If this happens, then this is not the first time that the largest party in the Lok Sabha elections has had to remain out of power.

Congress has become the second largest party

According to the results of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the Congress party has emerged as the second largest party and has won 99 seats. India Alliance has won a total of 234 seats but still needs 38 seats to reach the majority figure. The NDA alliance has won 292 seats and is on its way to form the government.

However, Congress could not form the government with the maximum number of seats.

In 1989, despite having the most seats, Congress could not form the government. After a bumper victory in 1984, Congress lost more than 200 seats in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections and the party managed to win only 197 seats. Janata Dal got 143, BJP got 85 and Left forces got 45 seats. Although Congress became the largest party, it still could not form the government. Being the largest party, the then President R Venkatram invited Congress to form the government, but Rajiv Gandhi resigned from the post of Prime Minister. At that time he had said that the mandate had gone against him, so he could not form the government.

After which Janata Dal claimed to form the government and formed the government along with BJP, Left parties and other regional parties. After this VP Singh became the Prime Minister. But this government could last only for 11 months. When the recommendations of the Mandal Commission were implemented, the Bharatiya Janata Party withdrew support, due to which the VP Singh government fell.

A similar incident happened in 1996

The same thing happened after the 1996 elections, when BJP failed to form the government even after becoming the largest party. In that election, BJP won 161 seats while Congress won 140 seats. After becoming the largest party, BJP claimed to form the government and Atal Bihari Vajpayee also took oath as the Prime Minister but his government fell in about 13 days, due to which BJP could not prove majority in the Parliament.

The Janata Dal then formed the government with the United Front coalition and HD Devegowda took oath as the Prime Minister after the Janata Dal managed to win only 46 seats in that election. However, this government too did not last long and fell within a year. Inder Kumar Gujral then became the Prime Minister but his government too fell after a year and mid-term elections were held in 1998.
