A statement given by Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge during the political conference organized at the historic Bapu Auditorium in Patna, the capital of Bihar, has created a tremendous storm in the politics of the country. Amid the already ongoing political tussle over the SIR issue, the objectionable words uttered by Kharge have taken the debate on political decorum to a new level. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments made from a public platform regarding his late father, the Bharatiya Janata Party has adopted a very aggressive stance and launched an all-out attack against the Congress Party. BJP has directly termed this entire matter as an open insult to the country’s Prime Minister’s late father and Indian cultural values.
The political temperature suddenly rose when Mallikarjun Kharge, during his address at Bapu Auditorium, claimed that governments elected by the people in places like West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra and Haryana were influenced through unconstitutional means. During this speech, when someone from the audience said in a loud voice that it was not possible to remove Prime Minister Narendra Modi from power, Kharge lost his temper and made a controversial comment using extremely indecent language. As soon as the video clip of this statement surfaced, there was huge anger across social media, national TV channels and political circles.
On this controversial statement of the Congress President, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took the Congress party to task by sharing a very strong and emotional letter. Amit Shah said in clear words that this indecent comment made by the Congress National President on the late father of the country’s popular Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the soil of Patna completely violates all the decent boundaries of Indian democracy. He reminded that this is not the first time that the Congress leadership has used vulgar and indecent language by targeting Prime Minister Modi or his family coming from an ordinary background.
Taking further aim, the Home Minister said that under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the Congress Party is destroying even the minimum standards of political purity and decency with each passing day. He said that the Congress leaders, victims of frustration and disappointment due to continuous crushing defeats in the elections, have now reached a state of complete ideological bankruptcy. The Union Home Minister bluntly said that the people of the country will not tolerate such insulting and indecent attitude and will respond to it in a democratic manner.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan expressed his deep pain over this statement of Kharge and said that restrained language is expected in the society from an old and senior leader. In any democratic country, the use of such indecent terminology about a deceased person, especially the Prime Minister’s father, is completely contrary to Indian civilization, culture and human values. He questioned whether Mallikarjun Kharge had made this controversial statement at the behest of the Gandhi family, and if not, whether the Congress high command would seek his resignation over this unparliamentary behavior of its national president.
BJP MP Sambit Patra opened another layer of the case while holding a press conference in New Delhi. Patra sarcastically said that when a Congress worker mentioned the popularity of Modi ji in the program in Patna, Kharge ji could not hide his irritation. He said that Rahul Gandhi’s continuous holiday politics and electoral failures have demoralized the Congress workers, whose anger is now coming out in the form of abusive words from Kharge ji’s mouth. MP Anurag Thakur and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also termed Kharge’s statement as condemnable and said that the effect of Rahul Gandhi’s association is now clearly visible in Kharge’s statements and Congress should apologize to the people of the country without any conditions.
Now the phase of legal action has started against this controversial statement of Kharge. BJP leader Krishna Kallu has filed a criminal complaint against the Congress National President in the local police station of Patna. It has been said in the complaint letter that social peace and harmony have been hurt by saying objectionable and derogatory things towards the Prime Minister and his family, who are the center of faith of crores of citizens, from the public platform. The police have included the complaint in their records and started investigating the legal aspects.
Meanwhile, the central leadership of BJP has announced a nationwide movement against Congress on this issue. On October 26, Bharatiya Janata Party workers will take to the streets in all the states, capitals and district headquarters of the country and strongly protest against the Congress. This political turmoil has come at a time when the India alliance of opposition parties is planning to hold a mega rally on November 1 at the historic Ramlila Maidan in the capital Delhi. Due to the aggressive stance of BJP, the opposition appears to be on the back foot.
Seeing the all-round attack on the statement, the Congress Party has started damage control exercise. Senior Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, representing the party, claimed that Kharge’s statement was being misinterpreted. Presenting a strange argument, Pawan Kheda said that Kharge did not mean the biological father of any particular person but the ‘ideological father’ of Prime Minister Modi i.e. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its leadership.
Kheda alleged that some elements of the BJP had deliberately tried to cause disruption at Bapu Auditorium and an attempt was made to disrupt the speech of a respected Dalit leader. However, BJP leaders have rejected this defense of Pawan Kheda and said that this is another failed attempt by Congress to cover up its indecent comments. This political dispute is currently the top topic of discussion across the country and there are full chances of it becoming more heated in the coming days.
