Shaheed Bishan Singh Buttar was the leader of those brave patriots who challenged the British Empire by rebelling in the army during the Second World War. For this courageous act, he was martyred by hanging by the government.
Shaheed Bishan Singh Buttar was born in 1915 in village Buttar Kalan Tehsil Baba Bakala District Amritsar to Namdar Gurdit Singh Buttar. He did his primary education from DB Middle School Mehta Nangal and matriculation from Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa High School Baba Bakala. According to Subba Singh, a famous writer of Punjabi satire, who was his classmate till eighth grade, Bishan Singh looked very young even in the eighth grade.
Gurdwara Singh-Bela Mehta was situated on the way to Nangal School, which was actually the secret hideout of Kirti patriots. While going to and coming from school Bishan Singh used to enjoy the company of patriots like Bhai Santokh Singh Dhardiu, Sant Inder Singh Murari and Sant Amar Singh Guilty Wale and listen to their views.
It was from here that the feeling of patriotism arose in Bishan Singh's mind which sowed the seed of independence in his mind. Even when financial circumstances led him to the job of the army's number one magazine, he kept thinking about getting rid of slavery.
Once he took leave and instead of coming home, he went to meet Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose near Seva Gram in Wardha. When he was ordered by the British government to join the war in Egypt, Africa and European countries on 17 July 1940 during the Second World War, 112 soldiers of Eki Nimbar Patrika went to the Gurudwara of Bombay and worshiped Bishan Singh Buttar to revolt against the British Empire.
He was court-martialled and severely punished for refusing to board ships at Bombay port.
Bishan Singh Buttar was sentenced to death along with three close associates and the rest of the patriots were sentenced to life imprisonment. On September 6, 1940, Bishan Singh Buttar, Gurcharan Singh Chaugawan Sadhpur, Sadhu Singh Dadher and Ajay Singh Nandgarh were hanged and martyred in Secunderabad Civil Jail. Today, a tribute ceremony is being organized at the house of Shaheed Bishan Singh Buttar in village Buttar Kalan (Amritsar) to pay tribute to these warriors.
