Bilbao extends goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala's contract by two years

Madrid, June 1 (HS). Athletic Club Bilbao has extended the contract of Copa del Rey-winning goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala until the end of June 2027.

The two-year contract extension puts an end to any doubts over Agirrezabala's future, as his previous contract was set to expire in mid-2025.

Agirrezabala, a 23-year-old former Spain Under-21 international, has only played 15 times for Athletic Club in La Liga but has consistently impressed in their starting line-up in the Copa del Rey over the past two seasons.

Agirrezabala played a key role in Athletic's cup triumph this season, making a crucial save in the penalty shootout which saw the Basque side lift the trophy for the first time in 40 years and secure a place in next season's Europa League.

“Winning the cup was incredible, but we can't stop here. Next season we have some big challenges ahead of us in important competitions,” Agirrezabala was quoted as saying by the club's official website.

Agirrezabala also welcomed competition from Spain international Unai Simon, who a week ago extended his stint with Athletic until 2029.

“This competition is very healthy and positive: it helps us stay on our toes and it's great athletically,” he said.

The club now wants to ensure the futures of winger Alex Berenguer and experienced midfielder Ander Herrera, both of whose contracts expire at the end of June.
