In Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, the police has busted one such big ‘sextortion gang’, four members of which have been arrested. This gang used to extort huge amount of money from people by trapping them through obscene videos or pictures.
What is this ‘sextortion’?
Sextortion means ‘sexual extortion’. In this, criminals first lure a person into the trap of friendship or love through social media. Then during chat they ask for obscene video calls or nude pictures. As soon as the person gets caught in the trap, the criminals record these pictures or videos. After this, they start extorting lakhs of rupees by threatening to make these videos viral. Due to fear of being defamed in the society, many people accept his words and lose huge amount of money.
How was the gang caught in Hazaribagh?
The police were continuously receiving complaints of sextortion. After this, the Cyber Crime Branch and the local police together formed a special team and started a large-scale operation against this gang. With the help of intelligence and technical surveillance, the police reached this gang and arrested four accused from Hazaribagh district. Many electronic gadgets like mobile phones, SIM cards and computers have been seized from them, which they used to commit crimes. The police are investigating all these gadgets so that other victims and other people associated with this gang can also be traced.

Especially it is wise to stay away from people who demand immediate video calls or objectionable content.
