Big relief to those stuck in the severe traffic jam of MG Road every day: 4.5 KM long elevated road will be built, the journey will be completed in minutes.

The much-awaited relief news has come to the fore for lakhs of daily commuters, office-going professionals and drivers who crawl for hours every day on MG (Mahatma Gandhi) Road, considered the busiest and important lifeline of the city. In order to provide a permanent solution to the severe traffic jams, incessant sounding of horns and increasing air pollution on this major corridor during peak hours, the Administration and PWD have given final approval to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and outline of the 4.5 km long 4-lane elevated road construction project.

This signal-free elevated corridor will pass over the narrowest and most stressed bottlenecks of MG Road. With its construction, the journey which currently takes a huge time of 45 to 50 minutes, will be completed in a faster manner within just 6 to 8 minutes. This mega project, which will give new strength to the city’s infrastructure, is going to prove to be a game changer for local connectivity and business activities.

The biggest causes of congestion on MG Road are major intersections every 500 metres, T-points, commercial complexes and heavy foot traffic. This 4.5 kilometer elevated project has been designed in such a way that there is complete separation of local traffic and through-traffic (long distance traffic).

  • Signal-free 4-lane structure: An uninterrupted corridor of two lanes each in both directions will be built on the main elevated portion, on which vehicles will be able to run at a controlled speed of 60 to 80 km per hour.

  • Flying over major intersections: This elevated road will completely bypass the 5 major busiest traffic intersections on the route, thereby eliminating queues of vehicles at the ground level.

  • Strategic Entry and Exit Ramps: For the convenience of daily commuters, well-maintained ramps will be built near major hospitals, bus terminals, railway stations and metro connectivity junctions, so that vehicles can easily board and deboard.

  • Widening and strengthening of ground level road: The existing road beneath the elevated pillars will be repaired, drainage improved and service lanes will be improved, providing open space below for local shopkeepers and customers.

Thousands of petrol and diesel vehicles stuck on MG Road every day are leading to wastage of fuel as well as an alarming increase in the air pollution level (AQI) of the city. Stop-and-go traffic is a direct burden on the fuel expenditure of the general public due to wear and tear of brakes and clutches of vehicles.

According to traffic experts, the commissioning of this 4.5 km long elevated road will lead to direct saving of lakhs of liters of fuel daily and significant reduction in carbon emissions. This elevated route will act as a dedicated lifeline for emergency vehicles like ambulances, fire brigade and police vehicles, which are often seen putting the lives of patients at risk by getting stuck in the jam on MG Road.

Like the model of successful elevated flyovers built from Shaheed Path, Kisan Path and Munshipulia to Khurram Nagar in Lucknow, MG Road corridors of various cities of the country are now being connected to the elevated network. Be it major cities of Uttar Pradesh or other industrial centres, it is almost impossible to acquire land in densely populated old trading markets. In such a situation, building a vertical elevated corridor by erecting pillars in the middle of the existing road, without any major demolition and loss of properties, has proved to be the most modern and environment-friendly engineering solution.

The administration has clarified that a phased traffic diversion plan will be implemented to avoid inconvenience to the public during the construction work. Most of the heavy pillars and girders will be manufactured in pre-cast yards and will be assembled with the help of cranes during night hours so that there is no complete disruption of ground level traffic during peak hours of the day.

This 4.5 km long elevated road will be equipped with modern technology. Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), high-definition ANPR cameras and over-speeding detection sensors will be installed on the entire stretch to completely prevent accidents.

Key Features of the Project:

  • A strict construction timeline of 24 to 30 months has been set.

  • To save energy, automated solar-hybrid LED lighting will be installed on the entire elevated portion.

  • To control noise pollution, noise barriers will be installed in front of residential areas and schools.

  • Safe crash barriers will be installed on both sides and a state-of-the-art storm-water drainage pipeline will be installed to prevent waterlogging.
