Washington : Former President Donald Trump, who is leading in the race for the Republican nomination for the US presidency, has got a big relief before the primary elections to be held in 16 states. The US Supreme Court on Monday lifted the ban on Trump contesting the elections in the Capitol Hill case and said that it was beyond the state's jurisdiction. Said that this right belongs to Congress. Trump has called the Supreme Court's decision a victory for the American people.
The decision of the Supreme Court has put a stop to those states including Colorado, Illinois, Maine where the practice of removing Trump from the ballot paper during primary elections has stopped. However, this did not end Trump's troubles. Four criminal cases are pending against him and the verdict is yet to come. The Supreme Court in its judgment said that no state can invoke the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which provides for disqualification from contesting elections in case of armed rebellion. On January 6, 2021, the Supreme Court of Colorado barred Trump from running for office on charges of inciting the Capitol Hill violence. In this, Section-3 of the 14th Constitutional Amendment was cited.
On the other hand, Trump won the North Dakota caucus on Monday against Nikki Haley for the Republican nomination. This Super Tuesday is a build-up to primary elections in 16 states on March 5. The states where elections are being held on March 5 include Alaska, California, Virginia etc. It is believed that the Republican candidacy will also be decided by the primary election results of 16 states. According to the poll, Trump is ahead of Haley in these elections. In such a situation, there could be a re-fight for the presidency between Democrat Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump.
