New Delhi: The central government has decided to make revolutionary changes in the rules of ration card to bring transparency in the Public Distribution System (PDS) and prevent fraud. Under these new rules, which will come into effect from February 2026, the eligibility of crores of beneficiaries will be re-checked. The government has a clear message that now only the genuine needy will get the benefit of cheap food grains, while the cards of ineligible people will be canceled with immediate effect.

e-KYC and Aadhaar linking mandatory, otherwise grains will be stopped

According to the new rules, now it has been made mandatory for every ration card holder to do e-KYC and Aadhaar linking. If you do not complete this process by February, your card may become inactive. Apart from this, the government has also tightened the ‘6 month rule’ – if a family does not take ration for 6 consecutive months, it will be assumed that it does not require government grains and its name will be removed from the list.

Income tax payers and rich families will be out of the list

In the investigation to be held from February, those families whose annual income is more than Rs 2 lakh will be deprived of the facility of ration card. Also, government employees, pensioners, tax payers and people who own more than two permanent houses will now be declared ineligible. Digital ration cards will now have the facility of QR code, through which workers will be able to easily get food grains in any corner of the country under the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ (ONORC) scheme.

BPL card holders will get special benefits

While there will be strictness on ineligible people, BPL families can get additional relief. There is discussion that in many states additional grains or cash assistance up to Rs 2100 can also be given on BPL card. At present the Central Government is providing 5 kg of food grains per person at very cheap rates under NFSA. To ensure the security of ration cards, the government has further strengthened the biometric system so that black marketing can be curbed.
