The Gaza war has killed thousands of people in the past year. Those killed in this war include not only Palestinians and Israelis but also foreign citizens. Even after a year of the Israeli army’s incursion into Gaza, Hamas fighters are continuously targeting Israeli soldiers. Shahiri Vahori is the first Indian-origin soldier to join a similar operation of Hamas.
On November 12, Hamas fighters attacked Zolat’s military unit with a home-made anti-tank shell, killing Staff Sergeant Gary Zolat and three other IDF soldiers. After the death of the soldiers martyred in this operation, the army has started investigating the incident. According to reports, Zolat was deployed with the 92nd Battalion of the IDF’s Kfir Brigade in the Gaza War and was about to complete his mandatory military service when he died. Zolat’s two sisters also serve in the Israeli army.
There was also a murder in the West Bank
Jews from the Zolat community from Mizoram and Manipur in India have moved to Israel. Gary Zolat is the second Indian-origin soldier killed since October 7, 2023. Indian-origin Staff Sergeant Gary Gideon Hangal died in the West Bank on 12 September. Hangal, who was posted at a West Bank guard post, was hit by a truck driver.
Indians in Israel’s army
Most of the combat units are composed of Bnei Menashe, a community of Indian Jews from Manipur and Mizoram. Jews of Tibeto-Burmese ethnic groups are said to be descendants of the Israelite tribes. The Bnei Menashe are believed to be one of the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel, who were exiled during the reign of the Assyrian kings.
