The Election Commission of India has always been committed to ensure that the name of every eligible citizen of the country is recorded in the voter list with complete transparency and accuracy so that no eligible voter is deprived of exercising his franchise. Under this objective, a very important and major administrative decision has been taken by the Election Commission regarding the ongoing process of Special Summary Revision i.e. SIR in the state of Jharkhand. In view of the political activities and upcoming election preparations, the Election Commission has officially announced to extend the deadline of this entire process to settle the practical problems, claims and objections coming at the ground level. When the work of purification of voter lists and addition of names of new voters or deletion of old names is done in a state, sufficient time is required to maintain accuracy, and this decision of the Commission has brought great relief to the administrative authorities as well as the general public and political parties.
Why was the deadline extended? The decision took into account ground level realities and applications.
Under the SIR program in Jharkhand, door-to-door verification, obtaining new forms and rectifying mistakes were being done on war footing by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for the last few weeks. Feedback was coming from various districts of the state that voters in many remote rural areas and urban areas were facing some difficulties due to the short time allotted for completing their documents or adding new names. Apart from this, a memorandum was also submitted to the Election Commission by various political parties and local organizations that the period should be extended a little more in order to make this important democratic process completely error-free. After seriously assessing these legitimate demands of the public and administrative reports, the Election Commission has taken the practical step of extending this time period in order to complete the work in a transparent manner without any haste.
Now the final publication of voter list will be on 30th November, know the main points of the revised schedule.
As per the revised guidelines issued by the Election Commission, now all the steps related to revision of voter list in Jharkhand such as the last date for disposal of claims and objections have been extended. After completion of all the formalities and valid disposal of objections, the final publication of the updated and final voter list in the state will be done on 30th November. After this date, the final revised voter list will be available at every polling station in the state, in which the names and updated details of the newly added voters will be recorded. The Commission has given strict instructions to all the District Election Officers and BLOs to make proper use of this extended period and ensure that there is no technical or human error left in the list, so that the voters do not have to face any kind of inconvenience in the upcoming elections.
Why is this change very important for political parties and common citizens?
Welcoming this decision of the Election Commission, various political parties and social organizations have called it a positive step towards strengthening democracy. The voter list is the most basic and first step of any democratic election, and if the list itself is faulty then the credibility of the entire election process is called into question. With the extension of the deadline, another golden opportunity has been given to those youth who have completed the eligibility age but due to some reasons were not able to register their names in the list. Along with this, voters have also been appealed to take advantage of this extended time to check their entries online or by visiting their respective booths so that when the final list is published on November 30, their names are found to be completely correct in it. Ultimately, this step of the Election Commission proves that conducting fair, transparent and inclusive elections is their top priority.
