
The Madhya Pradesh government is preparing to take major steps in 17 religious cities of the state. This decision has been agreed in the ongoing cabinet meeting in Maheshwar. This proposal of prohibition of liquor will be implemented in many religious cities including Ujjain, Jabalpur, Mandsaur. However, there has not been an official announcement in this regard by the government yet.
Which cities can ban alcohol?
The religious cities of Madhya Pradesh, which are likely to ban liquor, are famous for their religious and cultural importance. The list of potential cities includes:
- Ujjain: The main site of Mahakal Jyotirlinga.
- Omkareshwar: Location of Omkar Jyotirlinga.
- Maheshwar: Historical and religious places, situated on the banks of the Narmada River.
- Chitrakoot: Tapobhoomi of Lord Rama.
- Salkanpur: Famous as Shaktipeeth.
- Maihar: Shaktipeeth Maa Sharda’s abode.
- Amarkantak: The origin of the Narmada River.
- Mandsaur: Area of Pashupatinath Temple.
- Orchha: Raja Ram Temple, where Lord Rama is worshiped as a king.
Apart from these, liquor ban is also expected to be imposed in eight other religious cities.
Historical cabinet meeting in Maheshwar
- This meeting is being specially held in Maheshwar, which is also a symbol of the 300th birth anniversary of Goddess Ahilyabai Holkar.
- This is the first cabinet meeting in Maheshwar after 2003.
- Along with prohibition of alcoholism, new excise policy will also be considered in this meeting.

The government is considering new schemes to compensate for possible revenue losses caused by prohibition.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav indicated this decision during a program in Narsinghpur district.
