A very bad news is coming from the legal front for Bollywood’s veteran comedian and actor Rajpal Yadav. The Delhi High Court, while hearing an old check bounce case on Friday, has given a big blow to the actor. The court has not only upheld the sentence awarded to Rajpal Yadav by the lower court in this case, but has also termed his legal conduct and behavior as highly suspicious. Along with this, the High Court has issued strict instructions to the concerned authorities that Rajpal Yadav should be immediately taken into custody and sent to jail again.
This case has been going on in the court for the last several years and after this latest order, the actor’s troubles seem to be increasing once again.
After all, what is this whole controversy related to Rajpal Yadav?
This entire legal dispute started in the year 2010. At that time, Rajpal Yadav was making his first Bollywood film as a director, ‘Ata Pata Laapata’. For the production and budget of this film, Rajpal Yadav had taken a huge loan of about Rs 5 crore from a Delhi based company ‘M/s Murali Projects Private Limited’.
However, after its release, the film proved to be a complete flop at the box office and Rajpal Yadav incurred huge losses. After the film failed when he could not repay the company’s money on time and the checks given to him bounced in the bank, the matter turned into a long and complicated legal battle.
The process of punishment is going on since 2018, failed to keep promises
After legal action in this case, in April 2018, a magistrate court had convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife Radha Yadav for the crime of check bounce. Then the court sentenced him to six months in jail. After this, in the beginning of the year 2019, the Sessions Court also accepted this punishment as correct, against which the actor had approached the Delhi High Court.
In June 2024, the High Court had temporarily stayed his sentence on humanitarian grounds and granted him time to take “honest and genuine steps” to repay the outstanding loan of about Rs 9 crore, including interest. However, they repeatedly failed to fulfill their promises to repay the money. Due to this, on February 2 this year, the court took a tough stance and ordered him to surrender in the court.
“I don’t have money…” The actor reached Tihar jail emotionally
Just before surrendering after the court order, Rajpal Yadav had given a very emotional statement in a conversation with media portal ‘Bollywood Hungama’. Expressing his disappointment, he said, “Sir, what should I do now? I have no money and I don’t see any other solution.” After surrendering, the police put him in Delhi’s high-security Tihar Jail.
However, in this difficult time, many veteran actors and friends of the film industry came forward openly in support of Rajpal Yadav. Big stars like Bollywood actors Ajay Devgan, Salman Khan, Sonu Sood and Gurmeet Choudhary had decided to provide him financial help and also appealed to other people in the industry for help. Many singers and filmmakers had given him advance payment while casting him in their upcoming projects, after which he got bail from the court on 16th February. But now the latest decision of the High Court has once again brought him to the threshold of jail.
