Oppo’s popular ‘Reno’ series, known for its camera-centric design and sleek look in the Indian and global smartphone market, has once again come into the limelight in the tech world. After the success of the Reno 16 series, which was launched in the market just a few months ago, the company has now started preparations to launch its next generation smartphone ‘Oppo Reno 17’ in the market. The first live hands-on picture of Reno 17 has been leaked on the internet via Chinese microblogging platform Weibo and major tech leaks portals, which has created huge curiosity among tech lovers and gadget lovers. The pictures and technical reports that have surfaced clearly indicate that this time Oppo is going to make an revolutionary change not only in cosmetic design but also at the level of hardware and performance. According to the leaked information, this smartphone will first officially hit the Chinese market in November 2026, after which it will be launched on a grand scale in global markets including India in the first fortnight of January 2027. From Delhi, Mumbai to major tech retail hubs like Naja Market and Janpath Market of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, there has been a lot of discussion about the specifications of this phone.
Oppo’s Reno series has always been known for its ‘Portrait Expert’ title, but with Reno 17, the company is going to break all the old standards of smartphone photography. According to the leaked specifications, this device can have a 200-megapixel ultra-clear primary camera sensor, which will be equipped with optical image stabilization (OIS) and advanced pixel-binning technology. This heavy sensor will be able to capture detailed, sharp and color-accurate photos like daylight even in the dark of night. Not only this, well-known tipsters claim that Oppo is testing an innovative ‘Telephoto Extender’ support for the first time in this series, which will work to bring distant objects very close without deteriorating the image quality during zoom photography. Along with this, auxiliary sensors will be provided on the back panel for ultra-wide angle and macro shots. Live Photo tools have been re-engineered to record crystal clear short clips of moving objects. And for selfie lovers, it is expected to get a 50-megapixel high-resolution shooter on the front panel, which will come with 4K 60fps video recording and advanced skin-tone mapping algorithm.
It is generally believed that smartphones with big batteries become heavy and thick like bricks, but Oppo has completely overturned this perception by using Silicon-Carbon anode battery technology in Reno 17. The most sensational information received from the leak is that Reno 17 is being provided with a huge battery with a capacity of more than 7,000mAh. While the previous generation Reno 16 had a 6,700mAh battery, the battery size has been increased further in this new model, yet the thickness of the phone has been kept within a surprisingly slim and ergonomic range of 7.4 to 7.6 mm. This huge battery will prove to be the biggest boon for users who are busy all day long using 5G networks, gaming, high-resolution video streaming and content creation. In normal use, this phone, once fully charged, will easily make a full backup of two days without any interruption. To charge this mighty battery fast, the box is likely to support 80W to 100W SuperVOOC fast wired charging, which will charge such a big powerhouse from zero to 100 percent in just 45 to 50 minutes.
Talking about performance and processing power, there is a strong possibility of Qualcomm’s next-generation octa-core ‘Snapdragon 7 Gen 4’ chipset being provided in Oppo Reno 17. Built on 4-nanometer architecture, this processor not only minimizes power consumption but also has the power to run high-end gaming like BGMI, Call of Duty and heavy graphics games at the highest frame rates without lag. The smartphone will be the first phone to boot out-of-the-box with Oppo’s new custom skin ‘ColorOS 17’ based on Google’s latest Android 17. The biggest attraction of this software will be the Generative AI (GenAI) tools available in it. Features like AI un-eraser, AI perfect shot, automatic document summary, live call translation and advanced photo enhancement will be inbuilt in the phone. According to the leak, Oppo can also provide a special ‘dedicated AI button’ in the frame of Reno 17 on the lines of iPhone’s action button, with a single click of which users will be able to directly activate the voice assistant, camera shortcut or AI tools. To keep multitasking as smooth as butter, it will be provided with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 3.1 or 4.0 fast internal storage ranging from 256GB to 512GB.
It is clear from the live picture surfaced on the internet that this time Oppo has moved away from the trend of curved display and has given priority to a completely flat and modern design language. A 6.8-inch punch-hole AMOLED display with 1.5K resolution can be seen on the front of Reno 17, which will support dynamic refresh rate of 120Hz to 144Hz and peak brightness of more than 4500 nits. Its edges are extremely thin (Ultra-Slim Uniform Bezels), due to which the screen-to-body ratio of the phone exceeds 93 percent. The camera module on the back panel is arranged quite neatly; The 200MP main lens stands out prominently within the square-oval island. The frame of the phone is carved from aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, while the front and back are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. Additionally, it is expected to get a dual waterproof rating of IP68 and IP69 for protection against dust and deep water, which means that the phone will not suffer any damage even if it is dropped in water or gets drenched in heavy rain.
The Oppo Reno series has always had a very strong position in the Indian smartphone market, especially in the upper-mid-range and premium segments of Rs 40,000 to Rs 55,000. According to reliable industry sources, Oppo may repeat a major change in its strategy for the Indian market this time too. Just as during the Reno 16, only the standard model was made the main focus in India except for the ‘Pro’ model, similarly the Reno 17 series is also likely to introduce only a powerful single model in India. Talking about the pricing, despite huge upgrades like 200MP camera, 7000mAh battery and new Snapdragon processor, Oppo is planning to launch it at a very aggressive price. Its starting ex-showroom price in India could be around ₹ 44,999 to ₹ 49,999, which with bank offers and exchange bonuses will put customers in the ₹ 40,000 bracket. This smartphone will directly give tough competition to Vivo V-series, Samsung’s Galaxy A-series, OnePlus Nord/13R and Realme’s flagship smartphones present in the market. If all these leaked specifications translate into an actual device, then the Oppo Reno 17 is undoubtedly going to be the biggest blockbuster smartphone of early 2027.
